A direct current (DC) motor is the oldest type of electrical motor that has gained widespread use in a variety of electronic devices and equipment. DC motors have different arrangements and operation peculiarities.

The robot could easily move in any direction, avoid obstacles, make stops, and move again immediately. We achieved this by using a pulse width modulation DC motor controller that regulated the speed and rotational direction of the motor.

Note that: I’ve deleted the Automóvel-generated TIM2 initialization function and its parameter. Since our DC Motor library will handle that, we don’t need that function at all.

And note that the fly-back diodes are not integrated within the IC. Therefore, we may include them in the wiring diagram later on. If not placed, you can still have everything running just as fine. As long as, your motor’s load is moderate. As it goes up, the IC will start heating up.

The shunt field current is relatively small, the field rheostat has to carry a very small current and hence I2R loss is so small. It is an efficient method of controlling the speed of a DC shunt motor. Using this method, speeds above the no-load speed can be achieved.

By adjusting duty cycles, you can control the motor speed. A switching regulator has higher efficiency and less power loss, and PWM is widely used in speed controller design for DC motors.

Appropriate inverter circuitry is therefore essential for driving BLDC motors. Note that inverters can also be used with AC motors. But when a term such as “inverter type” is used with reference to consumer electronics, it is usually referring to a BLDC motor.

The flux can be varied by varying the current Ish through the shunt field winding. It is done by connecting a rheostat in series with the field winding as shown below.

In a DC motor, different speed controls can be achieved and hence they are used for many adjustable speed drives. The different mechanisms of speed control can be deduced from the speed equation of a DC motor.

This increase or decrease in power supplied to the motor is what increases or decreases the speed of the DC motor. In fact, PWM technique is so widely used to control DC motor that microcontrollers(not only Arduino or ATmega328p) have in-built PWM circuitry embedded in the chip. 

The speed of a DC motor can be controlled by adjusting the voltage applied. This is because the speed and load torque of a DC motor is inversely proportional, and this translates with changes in drive voltage.

Figure 1 shows the appearance and inner structure of a typical type of BLDC motor—the inner rotor type. Note that this motor’s permanent magnet is attached to its rotor, and the coils are placed outside.
